Greening Oakland

I see Oakland’s biggest environmental challenges as:

  • Reducing the City’s carbon footprint.

  • Creating walkable, bike friendly livable neighborhoods that balance Smart Growth and neighborhood preservation, while providing wonderful parks and open space.

  • Continuing to join with other cities to offer national leadership on environmental issues.

I’ve worked hard to address these challenges.  I co-chaired Oakland’s Sustainable Community Development Task Force that led to the Sustainable Community Development Initiative, which has led to Oakland building more solar per capita than any other City in the country.

I introduced the legislation that made Oakland the second city in the country to join the Chicago Climate Exchange and measure its carbon footprint each year.  I also initiated a campaign that has planted more than 3,000 trees in Oakland.

I’ve been a major backer for the MacArthur BART Transit Village and for placing a priority on development at transit hubs.

I Co-Chaired the campaign for Measure DD, which led to over $190 million in funding for Lake Merritt and the Estuary Trail from downtown to the airport.

I initiated the Temescal Farmer’s Market and I provided funding for the Frog Park and other parks at school sites in North Oakland.

And, I recently introduced the measure that the City Council passed to oppose the dangerous aerial spraying that the State wants to undertake.

Now Oakland is ranked in the top five cities in the country for sustainability and I have been a featured speaker on the Greening of Oakland at the Millikan Institute, at a major conference in China, and at other venues.

Together we can continue to make Oakland one of the Greenest cities in the country.
